Log reports and Information from the USS Nicholas (DD449)
The USS NICHOLAS was flagship of DesRon 21 and was involved with HMNZS Leander in events during July 1943.
Many thanks to Dave McComb for finding these items. They are courtesy of the USS Nicholas Association and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) at http://www.nara.gov/. The USS Nicholas Association site has a map and some more information about events around the Solomon Islands.
These are the log entries from the USS Nicholas on, July 13, 1943, the day Leander was Torpedoed. They include the ominous statement "joined task group less LEANDER and screen". Click on the log images to expand.
The image below is taken from a page on the USS Nicholas webite. That page and the following page show officers of the Leander a few days before she was torpedoed at the Battle of Kolombangara, July 1943. This photo appears to have been taken in Purvis Bay, Florida Is. (Solomon Islands). It has been enhanced (by RClass's lovely assistant) to show the faces better.
