Log reports and Information from the USS Nicholas (DD449) which was involved in the events of 13 July, 1943.

The USS NICHOLAS was flagship of DesRon 21 and was involved with HMNZS Leander in events during July 1943.

DD449 Log 13 July 1943 page 1 DD449 Log 13 July 1943 page 2 These are the log entries from the USS Nicholas on, July 13, 1943, the day Leander was Torpedoed. They include the ominous statement "joined task group less LEANDER and screen". Click on the log images to expand.

The image below is taken from a page on the USS Nicholas webite. That page and the following page show officers of the Leander a few days before she was torpedoed at the Battle of Kolombangara, July 1943. This photo appears to have been taken in Purvis Bay, Florida Is. (Solomon Islands). It has been enhanced (by RClass's lovely assistant) to show the faces better.
