R224 Phoenix rises
I’m the new ‘custodian’ of R224, Phoenix, designed by Graham Mander, and built by Nelson sailor John McArthur in 1962. The photograph is Phoenix at Pleasant Point Yacht Club in 2022.
Phoenix’s initial restoration was completed by Richard Shepard (of Wakefield) in 2002. Phoenix’s hull construction is double diagonal planks. Richard’s restoration work, with advice from Nelson architect and boating enthusiast, John Palmer, included new plywood decking and re-gluing sprung planks.
To assist me in compiling a record of her history, I would appreciate any information, including any photographs, irrespective of how vague or potentially irrelevant you think it may be. I’m fairly confident that I have found most of the information available on the internet, but I would welcome any leads you may have.
I look forward to hearing from anyone that may have information on R224 Phoenix, events that she may have taken part in, or the people associated with her.
Thank you
Peter Kingsbury
