Leander 2025 - NPCL, Lyttelton Harbour
Day 1
The 75th Leander Trophy commenced on Thursday, 13th February, with a freshening Easterly. Crews had to shake off the cobwebs as they battled through the growing breeze. Race 1 started in a nice 12kn NE building to 15kn. Followed by two afternoon races back to back in a solid 22kn with flat seas.
Day 2
By Friday, the wind had continued to build and 3 back to back races tested all seven boats. By the end of the 6th race the breeze had built to 25kn with seas widely considered flat for Lyttelton.
With an assortment of seven siblings racing in 4 boats its pretty much a family affair with some fairly serious sibling rivalries.
The most dramatic event of Friday was when Jimmy and Loren Collett capsized a couple of boat lengths above the finish line. Steve and Mark MacIntosh were breathing down their necks. The Colletts pulled off a quick kite retrieval, stood the boat upright, managed a sharp bear away in a big gust and just squeezed through the finish line ahead of the MacIntoshes.
Day 3
Saturday followed a similar pattern, with an already strong Easterly hitting 25 knots by 10 a.m. and continuing to increase.
As the wind gusted over 30 knots with an outgoing tide and steep seas, the race committee made the difficult but necessary decision to abandon all racing for the day.
Leander Trophy Dinner – Saturday Night
That evening, sailors, both seasoned and new, gathered for the highly anticipated Leander Trophy Dinner. It was a wonderful social event filled with shared stories, photographs, and a trip down memory lane with old regatta books and photos making an appearance.

Day 4 Super Cup Sprints
Despite the continued breezy conditions, the race committee opted to hold the Leander Sprint Racing closer to the club, with the top mark positioned just east of the club deck and the bottom mark south of the club. This decision provided an excellent vantage point for spectators enjoying the action from the clubhouse
The five sprint races, each lasting eight minutes, delivered no shortage of drama. Tangled boats, countless capsizes, general mayhem and even the unexpected appearance of a 1960's gennaker—older than half the fleet and far smaller than anticipated—made for an eventful and entertaining day of racing.
