Canterbury R Class Sqadron Commodore Comments on the 2001/2002 Season
Commodores Report
Locally the Canterbury R Class squadron dominates the dinghy fleets at Naval point Yacht Club. This is unfortunately a sad reflection on the state of yachting in Canterbury rather than a thriving R Class fleet.
Over the last season club racing has been evenly matched with the fleet in close proximity and no one crew cleaning up. While some of our more established members have been relaxed in their club attendances we are pleased to see Pork Sword added to the fleet. The highlight of the year was winning the Pinkney Trophy (Leander teams trophy). This was last held by Canterbury in 1995.
Paul Roe and Sean Milner deserve recognition for their efforts to develop double surfaced mainsail. As the class becomes more standardised each season we need to keep in mind that the classes enduring strength is its ability to innovate and renew itself as technology and materials develop. We all wish you well with this development
A big thank you is in order for all of the committee who have ensured that everything has run smoothly despite my best efforts. A special note of thanks is due to Sheryl MacGibbon whose enthusiasm and level of organisation has transformed the administrative affairs of the squadron.
Next season we look forward to the hosting the Leander trophy. In the meantime we have major refurbishments in progress over the winter and a balanced programme of club racing and out of town events to sharpen the skills. RRRRRRRR
