December 1999 - The Dolphin Cafe and Bar (Akaroa) Pegasus Crest Sprint Series
Always a good day out for fast and furious racing with admiring family, friends and babes looking on. Smaller haul this year with five boats making the journey, more babes though. Greg (the owner of The Dolphin) met us on arrival and introduced us to Vanessa the waitress on duty who would "get us anything we wanted". After a session of collective drooling, elbowing and knuckle dragging the boys unloaded their respective boats onto the lawn and set about rigging. The Akaroa Yacht club arrived in the form of a rescue boat and extremely enthusiastic crew who declined the offer of beers, coffee, Vanessa etc. so the boys thought that we had better do the decent thing and get cracking. |

The racing was fantastic with all the cut and thrust of a couple of crews sailing like machines and the rest of us sailing like we always sail (see Results, Nautical Terms and How to Sail an R). |

Not to be put off we raced back to the Dolphin Cafe, laughed politely at the speeches, told even bigger lies than last year and drank the prizes. Walter (Gryphon) then played the favourite game of hide the keys, whoever finding them gets to keep the Corolla. Nobody did so, we all went home with faces glowing from beer / embarrassment / sunburn, leaving the car and Gryphon behind. |
