Commodores Report 2006/07 Season

For me the highlight this season has been the performance and interest in the new L3 hull design.

While Sean and Dan launched the new design as Nuplex Davie Norris last season, it obviously took some getting used to and they were pipped at the finish for the Leander. This season they won convincingly in Auckland with some massive leads, especially in the final harbour race. What is really positive is that Paul’s new boat, TheVirtual, can also outpace a Woof in many conditions, provided of course they keep it upright. Three new L3 hulls are being built this winter so the bar has definitely been lifted. It will be really interesting to see how an L3 performs as a 12-footer, and if they really need those big sails to go fast.

The Squadron had a successful season with a turnout of eight boats at Leander and coming away with the Pinkney trophy (team trophy). We have also had some good trips away - Wanaka for the Ruddiman at Show Weekend and Wakatipu for the South Island Champs in February as part of the Lake Wakatipu Dinghy Regatta. A great time was had on both occasions – but Otago needs more wind!

It is good to see some interest from R-Class sailors in Dunedin and Timaru which we hope will build over time. Locally there seems to be plenty of interest from junior sailors and also from some parents which is encouraging. Those squadron members that were involved in planning and running the Youth Open Day deserve a special thanks. We must try and make more opportunities to foster this interest throughout the season.

Finally Tim is resigning as secretary/tresurer so I would like to thank him for the great effort he has put in over the past two seasons.
