The 54th Leander trophy was held in variable, tricky conditions testing both boat and crew thoroughly. Racing was held over Waitangi Weekend, 5-8 February 2004, at Auckland Sailing Club, Oraki Bay Auckland.

Congratulations to this years contest winners Steve Hogg and Neill Wood in R581, Stagecoach. The moderate easterly conditions on the last two afternoons suited the setup of the Wellington boat.
Leander 2002 - Pt Jerningham, Wellington
Steve Macintosh and Kenny Fyfe won the 2002 Leander trophy held at Pt Jerningham (Wellington) in fine style. Winning the Invitation race and 3 of the 6 races. MacIntosh having won seven times previously as crew teamed up with five times winner Fyfe for the contest.

Auckland's Alex Vallings and Andy Meiklejohn (Smit Millar) won for the second time in three years and had the contest tied up after Race 7.

What's an R Class Skiff?

Extreme performance, light weight, skiff style, development dinghy class in the truest sense (see the rules for details).

Length 3.9m (max)
Hull no minimum weight (typically 29-35kg painted), 1.4m minimum width
Construction Unrestricted (typically ultra lightweight Carbon/Foam)
Rig Unrestricted - typically two spreader pre-bent carbon spar
Foils Unrestricted
Working Sails Area is restricted 13m2 - construction and rig plan are unrestricted - ie. wings, pocket luff, rotating masts are all acceptable
Kite 20m circumference resulting in a 30-36m2 surface area
Crew 2 (minimum) on trapeze
